SNAG Annual Juried Student Exhibition

This year’s theme is No Boundaries. They are looking for work that pushes the limits, provokes intense reactions and plays with extreme contrast. Wearable art to installations will all be considered. Chosen work will be on display at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston during the conference. Send in up to three pieces to be considered. There is a $25 entry fee. SNAG Student Work Digital Presentation

The theme for the digital presentation at SNAG will be A Presence of Thought. This means that they are looking for images of your work in the setting it is meant to be rather than a typical formal and blank backdrop. For example, rather than showing a ring set on a piece of fabric, you would send photos of the ring on a hand. There is a $25 entry fee. SNAG Educational Endowment Scholarship

This is a competitive yearly scholarship of $1000, with one year membership to SNAG and your work featured on their postcard. The winner is selected based on a short artist statement, a letter of recommendation and 5-8 images of at least four pieces. The directions are very specific in how they would like you to submit your application, so read carefully! No entry fee, postmark deadline is March 15, 2010. Get the application here.

This scholarship offered by the National Society of Arts and Letters is for private study rather than college tuition but can still be very helpful! You must fill out a basic application and include the specific plans for the money in applications (for example what class you want to take). Be sure to read the brochure first and then fill out the application. Ages 16-22. Up to $5000 in funding for private study only. Submit images of 5 pieces by February 1, 2010. Pretty simple and no application fee. Apply here.

Dale E. Fridell Memorial Scholarship

Offered by StraightFoward Media. $1000 every three months for a quick and easy online application. Current deadline is October 14 but there will be another soon. Besides basic questions, it asks why you are attending college, what you plan to do in the future and how a scholarship will help. Apply here.

In addition to the group show on the first floor of Wexler, there is a show on the second floor that is part of DesignPhiladelphia 2009. Both shows will run until October 31st and feature jewelry done by UArts alumni. The new show features the work of  Anthony Tammaro in his first solo show. The neckpieces include work from his MFA as well as more recent work. He uses organic shapes and gathers his inspiration from jelly fish and cephalopod like creatures. He takes advantage of modern technology by designing many pieces on the computer. Tommorow, Friday, October 9 from 5 – 8pm, there will be an opening reception and artist talk. Wexler Gallery is located at 3rd and Race, just a few blocks away from the El stop.

John Eric Byers at Snyderman Gallery

The Snyderman Gallery is located at 3rd and Cherry St, one block south of the Wexler Gallery. John Eric Byers is known as a furniture artist, but in this show will exhibit several large wall pieces. The mosaic-like paintings are made from milk paint, varnish and wax on panels. The show runs until November 28.

Downstairs from the Snyderman Gallery is the Works Gallery. There is a group show featuring the work of 28 artists. The theme is recycled art made from found objects and will be on display until October 31.

Three Galleries Featuring Fiber Artists

The Bridgette Mayer Gallery at 701 Walnut St will be showing the work of Mary Smull until October 31. Mary Smull is a UArts fibers alumni who has recently founded SPUN: The Society for the Prevention of Unfinished Needlepoint, “a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating the worldwide phenomenon of unfinished needlepoint.” The exhibit, Finished Works, features unfinished needlepoint projects she purchases on ebay and finished with white yarn. Also on display for the month of October at this gallery is a show called Anthropocene featuring the work of Clark Gibson. He is a painter who crosses the lines of sculpture and painting through his organically shaped panels.

The Michelle Liao Gallery is right around the corner of City Hall at 11th and Vine in Chinatown. Professor at Moore College of Art and Design, Michael Olszewski, will have work on display. The show features his MYKO scarf collection.

The Fabric Workshop and Museum will feature five artists from the west coast. The show, New American Voices, is ongoing until November 22. The Gallery is a few blocks away from the Liao collection, located between 11th and 12th on Vine.
